Description
[Photograph of the destruction and pillage in French village Chérisy on the Arras Front. On August 27, 1918, the 22nd Battalion was ordered to capture Chérisy. By the end of the day, the 22nd Battalion, made up largely of French-Canadian conscripts, had succeeded in their objective. The next day, however, they faced a violent counter-attack by the Germans and were forced to retreat to their original positions. Of the nearly 700 soldiers who launched the attack, only 39 returned at the end of the day.]
