Description
Two early aircraft silhouetted against clouds in the sky. It is not possible to see any distinctive markings on either aeroplane, but they are possibly a French model, Salmson 2 on the left, and a German model, Albatros D.III or D.V on the right. World War I was the first major conflict to utilize aircraft on a large scale, initially only for reconnaissance, but later developed for specialized uses, like fighters and bombers.Note the emphasis in the inscription "an actual photograph" - this was an impressive technological advance not yet well-known to viewers.
