Description
[Photograph of a crater looking towards St. Eloi. The landscape at St. Eloi was characterized by mud-filled craters that were a result of repeated underground explosions. When Canadians were sent to fight the Germans on the front line at St. Eloi on April 3, 1916, they were largely unprepared for the confusion that would unfold. The craters, often waist-deep in water, had reshaped the landscape, making it diffucult for soldiers to take cover and to know where they were positioned. The Allies were unable to make any significant advances and the Battle of St. Eloi's Craters ended with the Germans in control of the battlefield.]
