Description
Photograph of a hillside with a number of Cedars of Lebanon growing on it. A stone wall runs along the bottom third of the image. Lebanon was occuppied by the Ottoman troops allied with Germany and Austia-Hungary in an attempt to keep the British from gaining ground. Opposing blockades of the Mediterranean set up by the Allies and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottomans) was particularly hard on the population of Lebanon. The Great Famine of Mount Lebanon lasted from 1915 to 1918, when the British and Arab forces were able to take control of the area.
