Description
Shows the crater-filled terrain created by earlier British attempts to destroy German defenses with undergound mines. By April 3, 1916 when the 2nd Canadian division attempted to occupy the area, they were forced to separate in order to find cover from inccessant German fire, while the enemy troops occupied the craters. Over the course of two weeks (3-16 April) the Canadians suffered 1,373 casualties without gaining any key positions.
