Description
Officers in a field. One of the mounted figures is identified by Alfred Soden English as Sam Hughes, Canada's Minister of Militia and Defense from 1911 to 1916. Hughes was a controversial figure, insrumental in organizing Canada's intial war effort. However, champioing the purchase of the Ross Rifle, among other unsuccessful command and organizational desisions, led to his dismissal by prime minister Borden in November of 1916.
