Description
[Photograph of a Church in ruins in Armentieres, a village in Northern France. For most of the war, Armentieres remained Allied territory. In April, 1918, Armentieres was assaulted with mustard gas during one of Germany's final offensives. Forced to abandon, Allied troops did not recapture Armentieres until September, 1918. By then, most of the town had been destroyed and become part of the Zone Rouge- areas that were so devastated by warfare that they were no longer inhabitable.]
