[Photograph of a church at Messines that was destroyed. Messines had been a German stronghold since 1914. On June 7, 1917, the British Second Army launched an offensive with the detonation of 19 mines underneath German lines. Largely considered a success, the Battle of Messines was a prelude to the Battle of Passchendaele less than a month later.]
