Description
The Ypres region, in Belgium, was the site of some of the deadliest battles in the First World War. The Canadian Expeditionary Force lost more that 6,700 soldiers here. While pushing forward to Ypres, in July of 1915, the Germans used a pre-existing French trench, refered to as ‘International Trench’ afterwards. The Bluff, created during the digging of the Ypres-comines Canal, was taken by the Germans in February of 1916 and then retaken by the British in March, 1916. It fell into German hands once again during the Spring Offensive of 1918, and finally retaken by the British in September of 1918.
