[Photograph of the landscape at Messines Ridge taken in 1919. Messines ridge was a natural stronghold and was the target of the Battle of Messines in June, 1917. The battle was an offensive led by the British Second Army under the command of General Herbert Plumer and was launched with the detonation of 19 underground mines, resulting in the immediate death of an estimated 10,000 Germans.]
