[Aerial photograph of the shell holes that characterized the battlefield at Passchendaele. Earlier fighting had destroyed any previous drainage systems leading to a landscape that was dominated by water-filed shell craters and mud. The numerous shell holes, often deep enough to drown a man, made it difficult for advancing troops and often left them exposed to enemy fire for longer periods of time.]
