Photographic Image

[Photograph of the ruined battlefield near Festubert. The Canadians fought at Festubert in May, 1915. With almost no time to prepare, two Canadian brigades were ordered to capture a small orchard opposite the village of Festubert. Fighting against Germans who held advantages of terrain and firepower, the Canadians suffered heavy casualties and made very little gains. The Battle of Festubert served as a hard lesson in poor offensive training. This photo, taken nearly four years after the battle, still bears the remnants of heavy fighting.]
